From summit shoots to same-week storytelling: How Funlab scales authentic people stories with Vouch

About Funlab

Funlab has built a reputation for out-of-home entertainment that is playful, social, and a little tongue-in-cheek. Across Australia, New Zealand, and the United States, the company owns and operates your favourite competitive socialising brands including Strike Bowling, Holey Moley, Archie Brothers, and Hijinx Hotel. About 2,500 employees — proudly known as “Motherfunners” — bring those experiences to life every day.

Naz Wilson, Head of Engagement, has been with Funlab for 18 years. His role is all about shaping culture and organizational development across markets.

“Encouraging our uniqueness is one of our core values,” he says. “It’s not about being the craziest or the wildest. It’s about supporting people to bring their full selves to work, because that’s when we get the best out of each other.”

The Challenge

Before Vouch, capturing employee voices and Funlab’s unique energy was a challenge. The team relied on annual summits, squeezing a handful of interviews into a videographer’s schedule. Outside of those rare shoots, the People Experience team might record a few nearby Motherfunners.

“It was either few and far between, or when we were doing it, it was really expensive,” Naz recalls. “We’d cram another five different videos into the same time whenever a videographer was booked.”

The limitations went beyond cost. Critical on-the-job knowledge sat with about 60 facilities specialists who knew how to keep arcade and bowling machines running, but there was no scalable way to capture and share their expertise. Executive communications had their own bottlenecks, with leaders struggling to align schedules for polished shoots. High stakes meant low volume. Only the biggest topics ever got produced, leaving the employer brand pipeline thin and internal culture less visible.

Why Vouch

When Funlab discovered Vouch, the appeal was instant. Unlike other tools, it didn’t feel like a bolt-on for marketing — it felt built for the way people teams actually work.

“Immediately from speaking to the Vouch team, it was a focus on the people experience,” Naz says. “With Vouch it was clear where we’d save time, reduce effort for the People Experience team, and make it easier for them to participate.”

That simplicity lowered the barrier for employees to contribute. Requests went out with guided prompts, and soon even the skeptics were on board.

“At first people ask, ‘Why do you need this from me?’” Naz says. “But after they try it, they’re vouching for Vouch. The advocacy is high.”

How Funlab put Vouch to work

Employer brand and talent storytelling

Funlab’s external employer brand used to be limited by its guest-facing nature. People know Strike Bowling or Holey Moley, but not the company behind them. That made it hard to attract candidates who understood the group’s playful culture.

Vouch helped change that. Job ads and career pages now feature real Motherfunners describing their own experiences, showcasing the personality and values that make Funlab unique.

“The storytelling from a job ad or something that’s external-facing was a real opportunity for us,” Naz says. “No one knows what Funlab is, by design — it’s our guest-facing brands that people will know. So, this was a way to bring our culture to life and help people see what it’s like to work here.”

And that authenticity has scaled quickly.Employees across brands and regions now contribute their own clips, from VenueManagers to new hires. Recruitment & learning teams can pull clips directly into job ads, onboarding materials, and social posts - no videographer or production crew required.

Learning and development

Funlab’s venues rely on highly specialized skills - from maintaining arcade machines to troubleshooting bowling lanes.Previously, that knowledge lived in employee’s heads, and capturing it meant long coordination cycles and costly production days. With Vouch, Funlab found away to bottle that expertise.

“For our facilities, where it is such specialized knowledge and we are needing to tap into 60 individuals, that is a game changer for us,” Naz explains. “Before, it was stop-start and full of  check backs. Now it’s a guided process and we can get into a rhythm.”

Those short clips now become on-demand training materials — and a living library of how Funlab actually works, created by the people who know it best.

Executive communications

Before Vouch, getting messages out from Funlab’s executive team meant aligning calendars across three countries and eight brands — a logistical nightmare. With Vouch, leadership updates now happen asynchronously. Leaders record short clips in their own time, ready to share in internal newsletters the same week.

“We can word them up before we send a request and get something in the newsletter later that week,” Naz says.

That shift has made the leadership communication faster & more authentic. Instead of chasing perfect production, the focus is now on meaningful connection. “Done is better than perfect. We are focused on business outcomes.”

Elevating Employee Engagement

Funlab has always celebrated creativity and connection, and with Vouch, those moments now come to life on camera.

Every year, the company’s much-loved CocktailCompetition invites their “Motherfunners” to invent & showcase their own signature drinks. In the past entries were submitted as recipe cards - but this year, employees recorded themselves making their creations, telling the stories behind them, and showing off their craft.

“It’s a really big deal for us,” Naz says. “We do it every year and it’s a lot of fun. Now people get to tell the story behind what they’ve made — it just demonstrates the skill and creativity our people have.”

The same approach now powers Funlab’s internal innovation competition, ForFun’s Sake. Employees will now be able to pitch ideas on Vouch instead of building slide decks, dramatically reducing prep time while creating space for their authentic ideas to shine.

“It means there’s a lot less preparation work,” Naz explains. “It invites more ideas, but it also allows people to show what they’re really excited about.”

These programs capture the creativity that defines Funlab’s culture. From mixology to innovation, Vouch helps deepen connection and engagement by making creativity easy to share.

Results and impact

The impact was immediate. Speed replaced long planning cycles. Leaders shared updates in days, not months. Facilities experts recorded processes without a roadshow. Learning materials were easier to update, and easier to access.

The volume of content increased as well.Employees who were skeptical at first became advocates after their first submission.

“Everyone is used to recording a long video and hoping you get it right, then trying to upload it and fix permissions,” Naz says. “After a Vouch request, people hit submit and say, that’s done, and haven't needed to do anything else.”

Authenticity is now baked into every clip.Employer brand content feels more human. Culture is showcased in employees’ own voices, and candidates see the real Funlab.

The cost savings were clear. By moving away from summit-only shoots and one-off videographers, Funlab now captures more employee stories, faster, and with less overhead.

Partnering with Vouch

Funlab runs on Microsoft Teams, and while full integration is still ahead, the company is already tailoring Vouch notifications to fit its workflow.

“We’ve had great support [from Vouch] to tailor those,” Naz notes.

That support stands out.

“[There is] fast turnaround whenever there are requests. It feels like we have partners in Vouch.” Naz says. “That unlocks opportunity for us. If things stagnate for a year, you stop raising improvements. With Vouch it’s the reverse. The team is welcoming, responsive, and open to enhancements.”

What’s next

Funlab plans to formalize notifications, explore the Teams integration and single sign-on, and keep expanding its library of content. Learning and development will capture more venue-specific content. Employer brand stories will scale for priority roles in Australia, NewZealand, and the United States. And culture programs will continue to use Vouch to lower barriers and showcase creativity.

For Naz, the focus now is momentum with structure. More tagging. More templates. More reuse. A larger, living library that keeps hiring moving faster, onboarding clearer, and culture visible.

“Done is better than perfect. Vouch lets us focus on the outcomes that matter.”
